We were invited by a large award winning dairy farm in the UK to help them devise a new system that would enable them to increase their throughput of calves by reducing weaning age, and thus avoid having to put up another building. They had also been concerned about the ability of staff to care after the calves in the best way.

We devised a new system that offered higher than normal levels of Axcelera-C to achieve the earlier weaning. The new system also achieves faster growing calves whilst saving on rearing costs.

In summary, with Axcelera-C 

  1. Calves weaned at day 35 (compared to the farm’s norm of day 50)
  2. It saved them £14.29 per calf to use the Axcelera-C system
  3. The Axcelera-C calves were measured through to day 88, and were shown to be growing faster by 67g DLWG over the whole period (p=0.044) and 113g over the weaning period (p=0.02).

This indicates that by feeding Axcelera-C the stress of the weaning process is reduced, allowing for a greater growth momentum and adaptation to efficient ruminant digestion.

No significant health issues were observed in both treatment groups and an almost complete absence of both scours and pneumonia was reported to be exceptional in these conditions.

The Axcelera-C enabled a reduction in CMR (Calf Milk Replacer), and due to the improved rumen development through the early Axcelera-C intakes, the reduced check at weaning meant that compared to the control, they powered through to show a greater DLWG (Daily Live Weight Gain) – all for less money in terms of milk, labour, feed costs and management time.

This shows that depending on the strategy of the farm – Axcelera-C is a flexible tool that can be used to help achieve the farmer’s objectives.
